Network File Shares

ReCAP 2/5/2014

The issues experienced last week with the network file shares have been resolved.

In the beginning, when the service was initially offered, it was not fully understood how quickly the service would be consumed by our customers.  The growth and use of the service far exceeded the capacity of the technology used to offer the service.  The type of problems experienced last week are not uncommon in technology. Servers fail, power is lost, and moving parts eventually stop moving. However, the length of time it took to restore the data was not common.

The IT Team has researched best practices and used this opportunity to rebuild the service with more flexible technology that will allow faster restore times (our hope is that in the future, you may not even know when a server fails).  The new setup offers us the ability to move, expand, and restore the data with quicker turn around times and offers you a more flexible and resilient service than can expand with your needs.

The bottom line is even though you can always count on technology to break, you can also always count on us to do our best to find the super glue and get it back together as soon as possible.

UPDATE 2/3/2014 - The IT Team worked through the weekend to ensure the restoration process completed successfully. The server is up and operational.  All storage volumes were successfully restored and checked for consistency.

If you are having problems with your network file storage, please contact the IT Help Desk for assistance.

At around 8 PM Wednesday, January 29, 2014, the server that controls the file shares on campus went down. The IT Team immediately began working to restore the service.  It was originally stated the service would be restored yesterday, Thursday.  However, the process is taking longer than expected, but should be restored by midnight tonight, Friday, January 31st.

The team will continue to monitor to restoration process over the weekend and full functionality should be restored by Monday, February 3, 2014.

Updates will be posted as necessary.
