NOTE: While Copilot is visible in various Microsoft applications, we currently do not have the full functionality enabled for Teams, SharePoint, and related apps. The Office of Information Technology is developing a security posture around its use and evaluating the best business model to ensure the associated costs are distributed fairly across departments.
What is Microsoft Copilot?
Microsoft Copilot is an AI-powered assistant embedded in Microsoft 365 applications. It uses large language models (LLMs) and Microsoft Graph data to help users work more efficiently by automating tasks, providing intelligent suggestions, and enabling natural language interactions across apps like Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams, and SharePoint.
Key Features
- Document Assistance: Draft, summarize, and edit content in Word and Outlook. Format documents using natural language commands.
- Data Analysis: Analyze data trends in Excel. Generate formulas and visualizations without manual scripting.
- Presentation Creation: Build PowerPoint decks from documents or prompts. Add speaker notes and design suggestions automatically.
- Intelligent Search: Locate files, emails, chats, and documents across Microsoft 365. Use semantic search to find relevant content quickly.
- Meeting Summaries: Summarize Teams meetings with key points, decisions, and action items.
- Teams Integration: Ask questions and get answers based on organizational data. Search chats, calendars, and files directly within Teams.
Security & Compliance
- Built on Microsoft’s enterprise-grade security and compliance framework.
- Copilot does not train on customer content.
- Admins can configure access controls and data boundaries via Microsoft 365 compliance tools.
Licensing Requirements
- Requires eligible Microsoft 365 licenses (e.g., E5, A5, or Copilot add-on).
- Full functionality depends on tenant configuration and administrative enablement.
Current Status (Internal)
Note: Full Copilot functionality is not yet enabled across Teams and SharePoint.
We are currently:
- Developing a security posture for responsible deployment.
- Evaluating cost-sharing models to ensure equitable distribution across departments.
Updates will be posted here as the roll out progresses.
