WiFi: Manually Register your Device to GeauxWifi

Summary

Information on how manually register your device on GeauxWifi

Body

For devices without the ability to log in to GeauxWifi with the login prompt, you can manually register the device. These devices include game consoles (PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo, etc.), streaming systems (Roku, Amazon Fire Stick, Apple TV, Smart TVs, etc.), eReaders (Kindle, Nook), and other smart devices (Amazon Echo, etc.).

Connecting a device to GeauxWifi

  1. Navigate to the GeauxWifi registration page by going to https://clearpass2.louisiana.edu/guest/auth_login.php in your web browser.
  2. You will need to login with your ULID and password. This is the same information you use to login to ULink.
  3. Enter in the MAC address for your device into the MAC/Hardware Address field.  A MAC address is a unique, hardware address/code that allows us to register your device to you on our network.
    • We have instructions for finding the MAC address of some of the devices we commonly see in our How to find the MAC address of your device article.
    • If you need additional help finding your MAC address, you can do a quick Internet search for "how to find your device MAC address" (ex. how to find Playstation 4 MAC address) and you should be able to find out where it is located.
  4. Enter in a name for your device into the Device Description field.
    • Usually the device type/model is a good choice for the description (Ex. PlayStation 5, Apple TV, Fire Stick).
  5. Click Register to register your device on GeauxWifi.
  6. On your device select GeauxWifi as the network name/ssid.
  7. Your device should successfully connect to GeauxWifi using these settings.

Common troubleshooting tips

If you run into any issues trying to connect to GeauxWifi, try these troubleshooting tips.

  • Restart your device to see if that allows it to connect successfully.
  • It can take 5-10 minutes after you register your device for the network to sync to allow that device to connect.
  • Be sure you typed in your MAC address correctly on the registration page. You may want to try registering it again to be sure.  Note that the MAC address should be 12 characters and will only contain numbers 0-9 and letters A-F.
  • You may need to see if your device has an option to Reset Network Settings to see if that enables you to connect.
  • In some cases, you may need to factory reset your device in order for it to connect.
  • Some home-automation devices and entertainment devices (smart bulbs, Google Home, Amazon Echo, etc.) may require you to connect your phone to GeauxWifi to complete the device setup. You will need to register your phone to GeauxWifi the same way you did with your device in steps 2-4. When setting up the network, you may need to disable MAC address randomization. In iOS, go to Settings -> Wi-Fi -> GeauxWifi -> and uncheck ‘Private Address’. On Android go to Settings -> Network and Internet -> GeauxWifi -> Privacy and select ‘Use device MAC’.
